Why do clients come to my résumé writing company? Quite obviously, because their résumé needs some work done on it.
There are always the usual reasons. It is outdated, it does not reflect where they are in their career today, or they've been sending it out and getting nowhere.
They don’t come to me looking for a career transition. They just want their résumé rewritten and revamped so that it reflects who they are today so they can get where they want to go.
However, since I don’t run an automated service or crank out stock standard résumés, I need to get to know and understand the person behind it.
We talk about what they have done, accomplished, and more importantly, what they enjoy doing. We explore their responsibilities, what they are particularly good at, and their skills.
Job titles are one thing.
What lights that fire of motivation in them and makes them a great asset to any company is another thing.
During that journey, sometimes, the pieces begin to fall together into a pattern that I see but the client has not seen. Not yet, anyway.
Could be a recurring pattern of skills, responsibilities, experience, or even promotions, as they have moved up through the ranks.
So I bring this pattern to their attention. And then they see it too.
And they begin to think maybe they are not at a dead end after all. Maybe they are at a crossroads.
Maybe there is a whole new future waiting for them and all they have to do is acknowledge it and cross the threshold.
We talk about what they already bring to the table and what skills can be cross pollinated. There is usually a discussion about whether additional training or education would be appropriate.
And finally, whether this new direction might be something they want for the next stage of their career.
It’s a nice “didn’t see the forest for the trees” moment.
This is never something I plant in my client’s head. It is a journey of discovery of hidden opportunities that manifest themselves into a scenario that says, “I can do this.”
I have the advantage of being able to look at their career with a different lens and connect the dots.
The resume revamp has now become an open door to a new world of possibilities and career fulfillment. And so a career transition was born.
